Why Should I attend a Retreat?
Our Group 60 weekend at San Alfonso Retreat House gives us, as recovering alcoholics, a special chance to deepen our spiritual lives and strengthen our commitment to sober living.

Page 89 of the *Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions* discusses the concept of an “occasional retreat from the outside world” as a method for self-overhaul and meditation, which is particularly relevant for gaining a quieter perspective for self-reflection. This practice is associated with Step Ten of Alcoholics Anonymous and can be helpful for maintaining emotional balance, as detailed in the context of anger on page 90.

    Key points from page 89:

    • Purpose: The primary purpose of these retreats is to provide a quiet, undisturbed space and time for a “self-overhaul and meditation”.
    • Practice: The practice involves taking an occasional break from the outside world to step back and focus on inner work.
    • Connection to Step Ten: This concept is a practical application of Step Ten, which involves continuing a personal inventory and stopping when we are wrong.
    • Benefit: Taking these retreats can help a person achieve greater clarity and emotional stability.
    • Analogy: It’s framed as a way to find quiet for self-reflection, distinct from the constant demands of daily life, and can be used to address issues like anger, which can be a recurring problem.
